Mayfield Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Mayfield Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 80km west of Emerald in the Central Highlands region of Queensland. It was registered in September 2025 and covers an area of 5,193.77 ha.

The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology determination. Soil carbon projects of this type involve estimating and sequestering carbon in agricultural systems through physically measuring and modelling changes in soil carbon over time. This is achieved by introducing new or materially different land management activities. For this specific project, the activities involve altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover, improve soil health, or both.

The Central Highlands region is a major hub for agriculture, particularly beef cattle grazing, irrigated cropping, and resource extraction. The area experiences a subtropical to semi-arid climate characterized by summer-dominant rainfall averaging around 657mm annually. The soils in the surrounding area are typically uniform grey cracking clays that are alkaline and have a high clay fraction, making them well-suited to pastoral use and agricultural growth.

In March 2026, the participant names registered to the project varied, changing from Sonya Spencer to jointly include Gregory Spencer and Sonya Spencer. The project is also supported by Carbon Link Operations Pty Ltd acting as another registered participant.
