Mayfield Soil Carbon Project
ERF205382
Project Information:
Mayfield Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Central Highlands region of Queensland, approximately 80km west of Emerald and near the Drummond Range. Registered in September 2025, the project covers a substantial area of 5,193 hectares. The property, Mayfield Station, has been associated with proponents Greg and Sonya Spencer, who have a history of implementing drought-resilient grazing practices in the area.
The project operates under the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models 2021" methodology. This method involves establishing a baseline of soil organic carbon levels through physical sampling, followed by the implementation of new land management activities designed to increase carbon stocks. For Mayfield, the specific activities include altering stocking rates and grazing duration to improve vegetation cover and soil health. The project aims to sequester carbon by increasing the amount of organic matter returning to the soil, utilizing the region's productive capabilities.
The environment in this part of the Central Highlands is characterized by a semi-arid, summer-dominant rainfall pattern, receiving approximately 600mm annually. The landscape typically supports grazing on Brigalow belt country, which features fertile cracking clay soils (Vertosols) and scrub soils well-suited to soil carbon projects. The project is supported by Carbon Link Operations Pty Ltd, a prominent aggregator based in Central Queensland that specializes in soil carbon projects. Interestingly, the property has served as a demonstration site for the Central Highlands Regional Resources Use Planning Cooperative (CHRRUP), showcasing innovations such as the use of drones for mustering and water infrastructure improvements to support rotational grazing.
