Piney Carbon Project 1
ERF204803
Project Information:
Piney Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon project located in the Shire of Victoria Plains in the Western Australian Wheatbelt, approximately 130km north of Perth and near the locality of Gillingarra. Registered in August 2025, the project covers 605.53 hectares of agricultural land.
The project operates under the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" (2021) methodology. This method involves implementing new management activities to increase soil carbon stocks, which are then measured over time to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). The specific activity for this project involves applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil, thereby improving plant productivity and increasing carbon sequestration.
The Victoria Plains region is a hub for mixed farming, predominantly consisting of broadacre cropping (wheat, canola, barley) and sheep grazing. The environment is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The soils in this area are typically sandy loams or duplex soils (sand over clay), which can be responsive to improved nutrient management strategies like those employed in this project.
