Project Information:

Lenah2025R_Howlett_S2 is a plantation forestry project located approximately 35km north of Hobart in the Southern Midlands region of Tasmania. It was registered in August 2025 and currently covers 213.57 hectares.

Plantation Forestry projects under the ACCU scheme sequester carbon by establishing new plantation forests, avoiding the conversion of existing plantations to non-forested land, or converting an existing short-rotation forest to a long-rotation plantation forest. Standard requirements dictate that these projects must involve the commercial harvesting of wood products, transitioning from a shorter harvest cycle (such as pulpwood) to a longer cycle (like sawlogs) to maintain and increase carbon stock in the landscape and in harvested products over a typical 25-year permanence period.

The Southern Midlands area is historically renowned for fine wool production, dry-land cropping, and commercial forestry operations. The region experiences a temperate, maritime climate with a typical annual rainfall of 600-700mm, though it is frequently subjected to long-term dryness and drought conditions. Soils in this locality are primarily characterised by shallow, stony brown or reddish-brown clay grading over a Jurassic dolerite base rock.

This specific project sequesters carbon by extending the harvest rotation of the existing forest. Lenah Estate Pty Ltd is the project proponent, with SFM Environmental Solutions Pty Ltd serving as the agent and property manager. On April 9, 2026, a variation was lodged to add further land areas to the project boundary. Extra records for the area reveal that some of the Lenah Estate forestry assets overlap with community recreation routes such as Jeffreys Track, and the overall estate is managed under formally audited sustainable forest management frameworks by SFM.
