New Horizon Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:
New Horizon Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located approximately 40-45km west of Wagga Wagga, near the township of Lockhart, in the Riverina region of New South Wales. It was registered in February 2026 and covers a project area of 1,319.61 hectares.
The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology. This method involves measuring a baseline of soil carbon and then adopting new or materially different agricultural practices to increase carbon storage in the soil over time. The carbon increases are then verified through direct measurement (soil sampling) and modelling over a 25-year permanence period.
The Wagga Wagga and Lockhart area in the Riverina is a major agricultural hub well-known for broadacre cropping (such as wheat, canola, and hay) as well as livestock grazing. The region experiences a semi-arid to temperate climate with moderate rainfall. Soils in the area are typically characterized by fertile red-brown earths and clay loams. This project aims to sequester carbon in these agricultural soils by re-establishing or rejuvenating pasture through seeding or pasture cropping, alongside altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to promote vegetation cover and overall soil health.
The project proponent is Glenory Nominees Pty Ltd as Trustee for the C J Burkinshaw Family Trust, working in partnership with the carbon service provider Select Carbon Pty Ltd. The Burkinshaw family has a rich and prominent history in the Lockhart and Wagga Wagga region, notably running a multi-generational transport and farming enterprise (Burkinshaws Transport) that dates back to 1942. Several members of the family have been inducted into the National Road Transport Hall of Fame. On the farming side, the family operations are highly regarded, having previously produced nationally award-winning vetch hay.
