Pine Ridge Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located near The Rock, approximately 32km southwest of Wagga Wagga in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Registered on August 11, 2025, the project covers a project area of 89.13 hectares. The surrounding region is a significant agricultural hub known for mixed farming, particularly sheep and cattle grazing as well as dryland cropping of cereals like wheat and canola.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon stocks through changes in land management. Specific activities for this project include altering stocking rates to improve vegetation cover and re-establishing or rejuvenating pastures through seeding. By optimizing grazing intensity and improving pasture quality, the project aims to sequester carbon in the soil profile while enhancing soil health and productivity.
Environmentally, the area typically experiences a temperate climate with moderate rainfall, averaging around 500mm to 600mm annually. The soils in this part of the Riverina are predominantly Red Chromosols (often referred to as red-brown earths), which are well-regarded for their agricultural potential but can be susceptible to structure decline if over-cultivated. Interestingly, the property or its immediate vicinity appears to have a history with carbon farming; public records indicate a "Pine Ridge Native Forest Protection Project" (Avoided Deforestation) has previously been listed, suggesting a long-term commitment by the landholders to carbon abatement activities.
