Newyungerup Project

Project Information:

The Newyungerup Project is a plantation forestry project located approximately 5km east of Greenbushes and 10km north of Bridgetown in the South West region of Western Australia. Registered on July 25, 2025, the project covers an area of roughly 153 hectares. The surrounding region, situated within the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes, is historically significant for its timber industry and mining operations, alongside agricultural pursuits such as grazing.

Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 methodology generate carbon credits by either establishing new plantations or, as in this case, preventing the conversion of existing plantations to non-forested land. By committing to replant and maintain the forest for commercial harvest rather than converting the land to agriculture (such as pasture or cropping), the project ensures the carbon stored in the trees remains sequestered.

The project operates in a high-rainfall zone typical of the Darling Range's timber belt, which supports robust forest growth. The local terrain generally features lateritic gravel soils and sandy loams, often overlying clay, which are well-suited for forestry species like Eucalyptus globulus (Blue Gum) or Pinus radiata. This project is one of several forestry initiatives by the proponent, Peppermint Estate Pty Limited, in the region.
