The Wilandra Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:
The Wilandra Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located approximately 10 kilometers south of Badgingarra in the Shire of Dandaragan, Western Australia. Registered in July 2025, the project covers a substantial area of 1,923 hectares within the state's West Midlands region. The project is managed by Intuit Earth Pty Ltd, a Western Australian developer that trades as Carbon Sync, specializing in agricultural decarbonization and regenerative farming practices.
This project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Measurement and Models). This framework allows landholders to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by changing farm management practices to store more carbon in the soil. For the Wilandra project, the specific registered activities include the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, landscape modifications to remediate land, and the use of cover crops. These activities are designed to build soil organic carbon levels, which are then verified through a combination of physical soil sampling and modelling over a 25 or 100-year permanence period.
The Badgingarra region is situated in a Mediterranean climate zone, characterized by wet winters and hot, dry summers, with average annual rainfall between 500mm and 600mm. The local landscape is dominated by the "sandplain" country, typically grey or yellow sandy soils that historically suffer from low water-holding capacity and wind erosion risks. The region is heavily utilized for broadacre cropping (wheat, canola, lupins) and livestock grazing. By implementing soil carbon activities here, the project aims not only to generate carbon credits but also to improve soil structure and water retention in these sandy profiles, directly benefiting agricultural productivity.
