APFL Bradshaw
ERF204379
Project Information:
APFL Bradshaw is a plantation forestry project located approximately 8km south-west of Mount Barker in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Registered in July 2025, the project covers a total area of 226.31 hectares. The site sits within a well-established agricultural zone known for mixed farming, including sheep grazing and cropping, as well as an extensive network of commercial blue gum plantations.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This methodology allows proponents to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by establishing new plantation forests on land that has not held forest cover for at least seven years. Unlike some environmental planting methods, this approach permits commercial harvesting of wood products, calculating abatement based on the long-term average carbon stocks sequestered over the rotation cycles.
Environmentally, the Mount Barker region is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The average annual rainfall is approximately 700mm, which is sufficient to support the rapid growth of Tasmanian Blue Gums (Eucalyptus globulus), the primary species used by the proponent. The local terrain typically features lateritic gravelly sandy loams and duplex soils (often referred to as "Marri soils"), which are well-drained and highly suitable for forestry operations.
The proponent, Albany Plantation Forest Company of Australia (APFL), is a prominent joint venture between Japanese entities Oji Holdings, Senshukai, and NYK Line. They have been active in the region since 1993, focusing on producing high-quality woodchips for the Asian paper pulp market. This project continues their long-term strategy of expanding the timber resource base in the Great Southern region while integrating carbon finance revenue.
