Burradoo Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:
The Burradoo Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located in the Central Highlands region of Queensland, approximately 40km south of the township of Duaringa and 110km southwest of Rockhampton. Registered in July 2025, the project covers 1,400 hectares of agricultural land situated within the Fitzroy Basin. The region is predominantly utilized for beef cattle grazing, a land use consistent with the project's proponent, Sarah Becker, who is associated with the local Jarah Cattle Co operations.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This high-integrity method requires the proponent to establish a baseline of soil carbon through physical core sampling. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the land manager must implement new activities designed to increase soil organic carbon levels, in this case, applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers, altering grazing intensity to improve vegetation cover, and introducing legumes into pasture systems. Credit issuance is based on the measured increase in soil carbon stocks over time, accounting for modelling estimates between physical sampling rounds.
Environmentally, the site sits in a sub-tropical, semi-arid climate zone characterized by summer-dominant rainfall, averaging approximately 600-700mm annually. The soils in this part of the Central Highlands are typically fertile cracking clays (Vertosols) or Brigalow soils, which are well-suited for carbon sequestration due to their high capacity to protect and store organic matter.
An interesting aspect of this project is the profile of its proponent, Sarah Becker. She is a prominent figure in the Australian beef and carbon sector, serving as a Chartered Accountant and rural advisor who has publicly shared her "soil carbon journey" at major industry events like Beef Australia 2024. The project is managed in partnership with Precision Pastures, a specialized agronomy and carbon service provider known for their data-driven approach to soil health.
