Moolia Pine Plantation
ERF204030
Project Information:
Moolia Pine Plantation is a commercial forestry project located in the locality of Mooliabeenee, approximately 15 kilometers east of Gingin and 80 kilometers north of Perth, Western Australia. Registered in June 2025, the project covers roughly 620 hectares in a region historically defined by mixed farming, including cattle grazing, citrus orchards, and broadacre cropping. The project area sits within the Shire of Chittering, a district known for its undulating landscape and proximity to the Dandaragan Plateau.
Operating under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, this project falls under "Schedule 1: Establishment of a new plantation forest." This activity involves planting trees (likely Pinus radiata or Pinus pinaster given the local soil types) on land that has not supported a plantation or native forest for at least seven years. Unlike permanent environmental plantings, this methodology allows for commercial harvesting of wood products while crediting the long-term average carbon stocks sequestered by the trees over rotational cycles.
The environment in the Mooliabeenee and Gingin region is classified as Mediterranean, characterized by cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The average annual rainfall is approximately 600mm to 700mm, which is generally considered the threshold for viable commercial forestry in Western Australia. The soils in this area are typically deep, sandy loams associated with the Swan Coastal Plain and Dandaragan Plateau; these free-draining soils are well-suited for softwoods like pine, which are commonly grown in the area to support WA’s timber industry.
The project is managed by Carbon Neutral Pty Ltd, a prominent Western Australian carbon developer and offset provider known for its large-scale "Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor" projects. While the proponent is famous for biodiverse reforestation, this specific project indicates a portfolio expansion into commercial timber assets that generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
