Maylea Carbon Project 1

Project Information:

Maylea Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, approximately 10 kilometers southeast of the township of Blanchetown. Registered in September 2025, the project covers a substantial area of 701.53 hectares. The surrounding region is characteristically semi-arid and primarily utilized for dryland grazing and broadacre cropping, often interspersed with remnant Mallee vegetation.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which incentivizes landholders to increase soil organic carbon stocks through improved agricultural practices. Key activities for this project include rejuvenating pastures with legume species and altering grazing intensity, strategies designed to boost biomass and ground cover. By implementing these changes, the project aims to improve soil health and resilience while generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) based on measured increases in soil carbon over time.

Environmentally, the site is situated in a low-rainfall zone, with Blanchetown receiving an average of approximately 240–320mm annually. The local soil profile typically consists of calcareous sandy loams and "Blanchetown Clay" overlying calcrete sheets. These soils are often naturally low in fertility and organic matter, making them responsive targets for carbon farming techniques that focus on building soil structure and water-holding capacity through deep-rooted pasture species and rotational grazing.
