Buaraba Creek Pastoral Carbon Project

Project Information:

Buaraba Creek Pastoral Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the locality of Buaraba, approximately 20km northeast of Gatton and 80km west of Brisbane in South East Queensland. The project was registered in June 2025 and covers a project area of 272.85 hectares.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Measurement and Models), which credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through improved land management practices. Specific activities for this project include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies and altering grazing pressure, such as stocking rates or duration, to promote vegetation cover and soil health. These changes are designed to draw more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile.

The Buaraba region is situated within the Lockyer Valley and Somerset catchments, an area renowned for mixed farming and cattle grazing. The environment is characterized by a subtropical climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 800mm. The local landscape features fertile alluvial soils along the creek flats, transitioning to clay loams and darker cracking clays in the surrounding grazing country. The proponent, Buaraba Creek Pastoral Company, appears to be associated with Santa Gertrudis cattle breeding, suggesting the land is primarily used for high-quality beef production.
