Landari FTT Ponds Arnals
ERF202753
Project Information:
Landari FTT Ponds Arnals is a plantation forestry project located at Dorodong, approximately 40km southwest of Edenhope in the West Wimmera region of Victoria. It was registered on June 13, 2025, and initially covered 144.52 hectares, with additional areas added through a project area variation in May 2026.
Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 methodology determination involve sequestering carbon by establishing and maintaining new plantations, or converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation ones. Standard requirements for this project type dictate that trees must be planted at a stocking density sufficient to achieve a forest crown cover of at least 20% and reach a minimum height of two metres. The carbon stored in the growing trees, debris, and harvested wood products is credited over the project's lifetime, explicitly allowing for the commercial harvesting of wood.
The West Wimmera area is a prominent agricultural district known primarily for broadacre dryland cropping and livestock grazing (such as sheep and cattle), with commercial softwood and blue gum forestry becoming increasingly prevalent in the southern parts of the shire. The region is generally classified as having a moderate to semi-arid rainfall climate. Its local environment features distinct ridge and swale formations, with soils typically comprising texture-contrast duplex profiles, characterised by sandy or loamy topsoils over heavier sodic or cracking clay subsoils.
An interesting note regarding this project is the federal support backing its proponent, Fairthorne Timber Trading Pty Ltd. The company has been actively supported by the Australian Government's Support Plantation Establishment program, an initiative designed to expand the country's domestic timber resources. Under Round 3 of this program, the proponent was awarded a $112,200 grant to establish 56.1 hectares of new softwood plantation in Victoria. This funding perfectly complements the project's activities, simultaneously contributing to national softwood supplies while generating carbon credits over a nominated 25-year permanence period.
