Silver Hills Carbon Project 3

Silver Hills Carbon Project 3 is a soil carbon sequestration project located near the rural locality of Rannes, approximately 50km northwest of Biloela in Central Queensland. Registered on April 15, 2025, the project covers 134.76 hectares within the Banana Shire, a region heavily reliant on agriculture.

The surrounding area is characterized by grazing and dryland cropping, with the Callide Valley being a significant hub for beef production. The environment typically experiences a sub-tropical, summer-dominant rainfall pattern (averaging 600–700mm annually). The local soils are likely fertile cracking clays (Vertosols) or loams associated with the Brigalow Belt, which are well-suited for soil carbon projects due to their high sequestration potential when managed correctly.

This project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through improved management practices. Specifically, the project activities involve re-establishing or rejuvenating pasture (via seeding or pasture cropping) and altering grazing intensity or duration to promote vegetation cover. By measuring soil carbon levels against a baseline over time, the project aims to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for every tonne of CO2-equivalent sequestered.

An interesting note is the project's designation as "Project 3," which, alongside the concurrently registered "Silver Hills Carbon Project 1," suggests the proponent, Agriprove, has segmented the Silver Hills property into multiple carbon estimation areas. This is a common strategy to manage baselining logistics and risk across large grazing properties.
