ProTen Insulation Upgrade Projects

Project Information:

ProTen Insulation Upgrade Projects is an industrial energy efficiency project located across ProTen's broiler farm facilities, with significant operations likely concentrated in the Riverina region of New South Wales, near Griffith, as well as the Tamworth area. Registered in April 2025, the project serves to reduce operational emissions across ProTen's extensive network of poultry sheds. ProTen is Australia's largest corporate contract grower of broiler chickens, producing approximately 25% of the country's supply.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Industrial and Commercial Emissions Reduction) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology credits emission reductions achieved by upgrading or replacing equipment to improve energy efficiency. In the context of poultry farming, this typically involves installing high-performance insulation in broiler sheds. Improved insulation stabilizes internal temperatures, significantly reducing the need for LPG heating during the brooding phase and electricity for cooling fans during hotter periods.

The primary operational regions for ProTen, such as the Riverina, are characterized by a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cool winters, making thermal efficiency critical for animal welfare and energy management. The landscape in these areas is predominantly agricultural, supporting irrigated cropping and intensive livestock grazing, with soils often consisting of red-brown earths and clays. By retrofitting sheds with better insulation, the project not only lowers carbon emissions from fuel combustion but also optimizes the production environment for millions of birds annually.
