Tarella Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Tarella Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Western Downs region of Queensland, situated across properties near Chinchilla and Tara, approximately 300km northwest of Brisbane. Registered in May 2025, the project covers a substantial area of 5,127 hectares. The surrounding region is a significant agricultural hub, well-known for extensive cattle grazing and broadacre cropping, particularly sorghum and wheat.

The project is operated by the Brennan family, trading as Tarella Wagyu, in partnership with project developer Atlas Agri Solutions. The Brennan family runs a high-performance Wagyu beef enterprise and is recognized for utilizing data-driven grazing strategies. The local environment is characterized by a semi-arid to sub-tropical climate with variable annual rainfall between 400mm and 650mm. The landscape features heavy grey and black cracking clays (Vertosols) and Brigalow belt soils, which are naturally fertile but require careful management to maintain structure and carbon levels.

Operating under the 2021 Soil Carbon (Measurement and Models) methodology, this project involves establishing a baseline of soil organic carbon through sampling and then implementing management changes to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). The primary activity involves altering grazing stocking rates, duration, and intensity to improve soil vegetation cover and overall soil health. By optimizing grazing pressure, the project aims to increase biomass and root retention, thereby sequestering more carbon in the soil profile while supporting the productivity of the cattle enterprise.
