Boambolo Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:
Boambolo Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the locality of Boambolo, approximately 25 kilometers south of Yass in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. Registered in February 2025, the project covers 736 hectares of agricultural land situated near the Murrumbidgee River. The project is undertaken by New Kayarem Pty Limited, the entity associated with the historic fine wool and grazing property "Cavan Station," in partnership with carbon service provider Atlas Agri Solutions.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits landholders for measurable increases in soil organic carbon (SOC). To achieve this, the project proponent alters land management practices, specifically changing the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing. These changes are designed to improve ground cover and soil health, thereby sequestering more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile compared to the property's historical baseline.
The Boambolo region lies within the South West Slopes and Southern Tablelands, an area traditionally dominated by sheep grazing and fine wool production. The local environment typically experiences a temperate climate with an annual rainfall of approximately 650mm to 700mm. The terrain features rolling hills with soils that commonly include Chromosols (red-brown earths) and sedimentary derivatives, often associated with the region's limestone geology, Cavan Station itself is renowned for its limestone caves.
