Centurion WCMG Electricity Generation Facility Expansion

Project Information:

Centurion WCMG Electricity Generation Facility Expansion is a Coal Mine Waste Gas (CMWG) project located at the Centurion Coal Mine (formerly known as North Goonyella), approximately 40km north of the town of Moranbah in Queensland's Bowen Basin. Registered in March 2025, the project is operated by Carbon Logica Pty Ltd and focuses on the installation and operation of electricity production devices designed to capture and combust fugitive methane emissions from the underground mine.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Coal Mine Waste Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits the destruction of methane, a potent greenhouse gas released during coal mining, that would otherwise be vented into the atmosphere. By utilizing this gas to generate electricity, the project not only converts the methane into less harmful carbon dioxide but also produces power that displaces electricity otherwise drawn from the grid, which is typically more carbon-intensive.

The Bowen Basin region surrounding the project is a major hub for metallurgical coal mining but also supports extensive cattle grazing. The environment is characterized by a semi-arid to sub-tropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall. The local landscape is dominated by level to gently undulating plains featuring cracking clay soils (Vertosols), often historically associated with Brigalow scrub vegetation.

The Centurion mine itself is a significant underground longwall operation owned by Peabody Energy. It was renamed from "North Goonyella" to "Centurion" in December 2023 following the acquisition of the adjacent Wards Well deposit and a major redevelopment effort to restart operations after a closure in 2018. Carbon Logica, the project proponent, specializes in developing power generation solutions using waste coal mine gas and partners with major mining operators to reduce Scope 1 emissions.
