Project Information:
AA2025R_ShawL_S3 is a plantation forestry project located in the Dorset local government area of North East Tasmania, situated near the rural town of Winnaleah. It was registered in March 2025 and covers a highly targeted area of 29.17 hectares.
Plantation forestry carbon projects involve sequestering carbon by either establishing new plantations, converting short-rotation crops to long-rotation timber, or preventing the clearing of existing plantations. According to the standard methodology requirements, this specific project sequesters carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation to non-forested land. By continuing the plantation lifecycle, the carbon stored within the forest biomass and landscape is maintained rather than released.
The North East region of Tasmania, specifically within the Dorset municipality, is well known for combining productive commercial forestry with robust agricultural operations such as dairy and cattle grazing. The area benefits from a high rainfall classification and extremely fertile soils, typically rich volcanic ferrosols (red basalts) and clay loams, which provide ideal conditions for both deep-rooted trees and high-yield pastures.
An interesting facet of this project is its inclusion in the "ActivAcre" program, which is managed by the project agent, SFM Environmental Solutions. Backed by the natural capital investment manager New Forests, ActivAcre partners with local Tasmanian farmers to lease underutilised or less productive agricultural land for tree planting. This initiative gives landowners a steady, supplementary income stream while delivering broader environmental benefits such as enhanced soil conservation, livestock shelter, and carbon sequestration. The official project proponent overseeing the registration is The Trust Company (Australia) Limited, acting as the trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust.
