Project Information:

AA2026R_RoyalGeorge_S1S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located at Royal George, approximately 100km southeast of Launceston in Tasmania. It was registered in April 2025 and covers 328.19 ha.

Plantation forestry projects involve generating carbon credits by establishing a new plantation forest, continuing an existing plantation, or converting a short-rotation plantation to a long-rotation one. These projects require establishing and maintaining trees for the commercial harvesting of wood products, generally requiring management to achieve a forest cover of at least 2 meters in height and 20% crown cover.

The Royal George area is situated in the Fingal Valley within the Northern Midlands. The region has a long history of forestry operations, 19th-century tin mining, and agriculture, specifically sheep grazing for superfine wool. The area has a cool, temperate climate and falls within one of Tasmania's lower rainfall regions. Soils in the region are predominantly sandy, with the Royal George area specifically featuring gravelly quartz soils derived from underlying granite, alongside patches of basalt and alluvium in the broader river valleys.

This project sequesters carbon by establishing a new plantation forest while also avoiding the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation forest. It is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions on behalf of the proponent, The Trust Company (Australia) Limited as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust. This overarching program allows landowners to lease underutilized sections of their farms for timber production, thereby creating carbon credits alongside traditional agricultural operations.
