Project Information:
AA2026R_RoyalGeorge_S1S3 is a plantation forestry project located in the locality of Royal George, approximately 85km southeast of Launceston in Tasmania. Registered in April 2025, the project covers a total area of 328.19 hectares within the Northern Midlands local government area. The surrounding region of the Fingal Valley is characterized by a mix of native forestry, softwood plantations, and grazing on improved pastures.
The project operates under the 2022 Plantation Forestry methodology, utilizing both Schedule 1 and Schedule 3 activities. This indicates a hybrid approach: part of the project involves establishing a new plantation on land that has been clear of forest for at least seven years, while another portion involves "avoiding conversion," where an existing plantation that was scheduled to be reverted to non-forest land (such as pasture) is instead maintained as a forest. As a commercial plantation, the trees are grown with the intent of harvesting for wood products, which stores carbon in the timber while sequestering CO2 during the growth phase.
Royal George is situated in the Eastern Tiers of Tasmania, a region that typically experiences moderate rainfall ranging between 600mm and 800mm annually, often influenced by the rain shadow of the western highlands. The soils in this area are generally texture-contrast soils, often derived from granite or dolerite, ranging from sandy loams to clay loams which are well-suited for Pinus radiata or Eucalyptus nitens plantations.
An interesting aspect of this project is its naming convention and management structure. The prefix "AA" typically associates the project with "ActivAcre," a program run by the project agent, SFM Environmental Solutions. ActivAcre allows landowners to lease underutilized land for forestry while retaining ownership, providing a diversified income stream. The "S1S3" suffix explicitly confirms the dual use of Schedule 1 (New Plantation) and Schedule 3 (Avoided Conversion) methods, maximizing the carbon potential of the site.
