Dreyfus Carbon Project
ERF200528
Project Information:
The Dreyfus Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located near the small locality of Kuttabul, approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Mackay in Queensland. Registered on February 4, 2025, the project covers a project area of nearly 153 hectares. The region is situated within the high-rainfall tropical coast of Queensland, an area traditionally dominated by sugar cane cultivation and cattle grazing.
Operating under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021, the project aims to build soil carbon stocks through improved land management. This "hybrid" methodology allows proponents to use a combination of physical soil core sampling and modeled estimates to verify carbon increases, helping to reduce the high costs often associated with purely measurement-based approaches. The proponent, Agriprove Solutions, typically partners with landholders to implement these systems, handling the administrative compliance while the farmer manages the on-ground activities.
The environmental context of the Kuttabul and Mackay region is characterized by a wet tropical to sub-tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons and high annual rainfall, often exceeding 1,500mm. The soils in this undulating coastal landscape are variable but frequently include fertile Dermosols and Chromosols (texture-contrast soils) or cracking clays (Vertosols) in lower-lying areas, which are well-suited to rapid biomass generation. The project activities focus on re-establishing or rejuvenating pastures, potentially using multispecies seeding or pasture cropping, and altering grazing intensity. By optimizing the stocking rate and improving vegetation cover, the project aims to increase the input of organic matter into the soil, thereby sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide.
