Project Information:

Kingfisher Schedule 2 2024 ACCU-Scheme Project is a plantation forestry project located across multiple sites in Northern and Central Tasmania, generally surrounding the city of Launceston. It was registered in July 2025 and covers 3,472.83 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects operating under the "conversion from short-rotation to long-rotation" methodology involve transitioning existing short-rotation forests, typically harvested early (around 10-15 years) for pulpwood, into long-rotation forests. This allows the trees to grow larger and stand for much longer periods, sequestering additional carbon in the landscape and subsequently storing it long-term in durable harvested wood products like structural timber.

The region across Northern and Central Tasmania is heavily utilized for commercial forestry, mixed agriculture, and livestock grazing. The area features a cool, temperate climate with historically high rainfall. Soils across these forestry estates are generally rich and well-draining, primarily consisting of fertile basalt-derived soils (ferrosols) and clay loams.

This project is managed by Forico Pty Limited, Tasmania’s largest private forest management company, acting on behalf of the Tasmanian Forest Operating Sub Trust. By extending the harvest cycle of these 3,472 hectares, the project actively keeps carbon stored in the ecosystem for longer and produces high-quality sawlogs rather than short-lived woodchips, demonstrating a strong commercial shift toward sustainable, long-term timber products.
