Bulla Landfill Gas Flaring Project

ERF199745

Project Information:

Bulla Landfill Gas Flaring Project is a landfill gas project located at the Sunbury Eco-Hub in Bulla, Victoria. The project is situated approximately 25km northwest of the Melbourne CBD and 6km southeast of the township of Sunbury. Registered on 19 March 2025, the project is operated by Hi-Quality Sales Victoria Pty Ltd and focuses on the installation of a new gas collection system to capture and combust methane generated from legacy and non-legacy waste within the facility's landfill cells.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions achieved by capturing methane, a potent greenhouse gas produced by decomposing organic matter in oxygen-deprived environments, and converting it into carbon dioxide through flaring or electricity generation. By installing new collection infrastructure, the proponent prevents this methane from venting into the atmosphere.

The Sunbury Eco-Hub is a significant waste management and resource recovery precinct situated on the Western Volcanic Plains. The region is characterized by heavy basalt clay soils and a temperate climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm. The surrounding land use is a mix of industrial quarrying, waste processing, and peri-urban grazing. Notably, the Hi-Quality Group has outlined broader ambitions for the site, including a proposed Waste-to-Energy facility designed to process residual waste, complementing this specific landfill gas abatement activity.
