Project Information:
AA2025R_BowdenL_S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located near the rural community of Levendale, approximately 50km northeast of Hobart in the Southern Midlands local government area of Tasmania. It was registered in February 2025 and covers an area of 52.71 hectares.
Plantation forestry projects registered under the 2022 methodology determination generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by sequestering carbon through establishing new plantations, converting short-rotation to long-rotation plantations, or avoiding the conversion of existing plantations to non-forested land. This specific project undertakes the latter activity (Schedule 3) by maintaining an existing or recently harvested plantation forest that was otherwise at risk of being converted into agricultural land. The method requires independent financial assessments to demonstrate that continuing the plantation would be less financially viable than alternative land uses without the support of carbon credits.
The Southern Midlands area is traditionally known for extensive dry-land agriculture, including broadacre farming for livestock, wool, and cereal crops, alongside established forestry operations. Situated in the rain shadow of the Central Highlands, Levendale experiences a cool temperate climate with relatively low average annual rainfall ranging between 450mm and 600mm. The soils in this local environment are heavily influenced by underlying Jurassic dolerite, often featuring shallow, stony red-brown topsoils that transition into deeper clay subsoils, making them moderately susceptible to water erosion.
This project is managed by the agent SFM Environmental Solutions Pty Ltd on behalf of The Trust Company (Australia) Limited, acting as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust. This sub-trust oversees several similar plantation and afforestation carbon projects across Tasmania, aiming to secure permanent carbon sinks in the state's agricultural and forested landscapes. By continuing the plantation on this site, the proponent avoids the carbon emissions associated with clearing the land for pasture and sustains its long-term atmospheric sequestration.
