Project Information:
AA2025R_BowdenL_S3 is a Plantation Forestry carbon project located near the rural community of Levendale, approximately 50km northeast of Hobart in the Southern Midlands region of Tasmania. Registered on February 13, 2025, the project covers a total area of 52.71 hectares. The project operates within the Southern Midlands Council area, a region characterised by a mix of dry sclerophyll forest, grazing pastures, and forestry operations.
The project utilises the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it falls under the "Avoided Conversion" activity category. This means the project involves retaining an existing plantation forest that was scheduled to be converted into non-forested land, typically for agricultural use such as cropping or grazing, thereby keeping the carbon sequestered in the trees and soil. By maintaining the plantation, the proponent avoids the emissions that would have resulted from clearing and decomposition.
Environmentally, the Southern Midlands region experiences a cool temperate climate with moderate rainfall, generally ranging between 500mm and 700mm annually, often sitting in the rain shadow of the central plateau. The landscape is typically supported by soils derived from dolerite and sandstone, which are well-suited to both forestry and grazing. The "Bowden" in the project name likely refers to the participating landowner, while the "AA" prefix and the involvement of SFM Environmental Solutions identify this as part of the "ActivAcre" program. ActivAcre is a partnership model that allows farmers to lease underutilised land for timber and carbon projects, providing a diversified income stream while enhancing farm shelter and biodiversity.
