Butler Carbon Project 1
ERF199370
Project Information:
Butler Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Southern Grampians region of Western Victoria, approximately 20km northeast of the major regional centre of Hamilton. Registered in November 2024, the project covers 136.51 hectares near the locality of Moutajup.
The surrounding region is part of the Victorian Volcanic Plains, a fertile agricultural area heavily utilized for grazing (sheep and cattle) and cropping. The environment is characterized by a temperate climate with reliable, winter-dominant rainfall. The local soils are typically heavy, fertile basalt clays and clay loams, which are well-suited for soil carbon projects due to their high potential for organic matter retention.
Operating under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, this project aims to sequester carbon by modifying land management practices. Specifically, the proponent, Agriprove Solutions, intends to alter stocking rates and grazing intensity to maintain better soil vegetation cover, thereby improving soil health. Additionally, the project includes converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices to minimize soil disturbance and preserve existing carbon stocks.
