Durack Carbon Project 1

Project Information:

Durack Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon project located approximately 10km west of Bordertown in South Australia. It was registered in July 2024 and covers 181.09ha.

Soil carbon projects under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models method involve increasing the amount of carbon stored in agricultural soils to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). Standard requirements stipulate that proponents must undertake new or materially different land management activities, such as applying nutrients or altering grazing practices, and measure carbon increases using direct soil sampling or hybrid modelling.

The Bordertown area is known for mixed farming, incorporating broadacre cropping and livestock grazing. The area is considered a moderate rainfall zone, receiving around 460mm annually, and soils are generally calcareous loams (Calcarosols) and sandy loams over clay subsoils.

This project was set up to increase soil carbon in the agricultural system by applying nutrients to the land in the form of synthetic or non-synthetic fertiliser to address a material deficiency. Interestingly, corporate registry data estimates that the project, managed by AgriProve Solutions, will sequester approximately 21 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.
