Landari Mount Sabine 2024
ERF194266
Project Information:
Landari Mount Sabine 2024 is a plantation forestry project located in the Otway Ranges of south-west Victoria, situated approximately 25km inland from the coastal town of Apollo Bay and 40km south of Colac. Registered on November 20, 2024, the project covers 47.23 hectares in an area renowned for its steep, forested terrain and high-productivity timber operations. The region is a mix of protected state forest (Great Otway National Park) and private land utilized for commercial forestry and grazing.
The project operates under the 2022 Plantation Forestry methodology, which allows for the establishment of new plantation forests on land that has been clear of forest for at least seven years. Unlike environmental plantings which are permanent and protected from harvest, this method permits commercial harvesting. Carbon credits (ACCUs) are calculated based on the carbon sequestered in the trees as they grow, as well as the carbon stored long-term in the harvested wood products.
Environmentally, the Mount Sabine area is distinct for having some of the highest rainfall in Victoria, often exceeding 1,000mm annually due to its elevation and exposure to Southern Ocean weather systems. The soils in this region are typically deep, fertile, and acidic, classified often as friable loams or clay loams derived from Cretaceous sedimentary rocks (Otway Group). These conditions support vigorous tree growth, making the area a premier location for softwood and hardwood plantations.
The project proponent, Landari Pty Ltd, is a specialized forestry and carbon development firm founded by experienced foresters. An interesting note regarding the location is that Mount Sabine itself is the highest point in the Otway Ranges, rising 583 metres above sea level; the project's proximity to this peak suggests it sits within a high-rainfall, high-yield zone ideal for rapid carbon sequestration.
