Project Information:

Carbon + Biodiversity project ID 1473 is a permanent environmental planting project located approximately 20km west of the coastal town of Bremer Bay, in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Registered on August 14, 2024, the project covers 142.27 hectares of land within the Shire of Jerramungup. This region is traditionally associated with broadacre mixed farming, including cropping (cereals, canola) and livestock grazing, utilizing the area's reliable rainfall and arable plains.

The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree and shrub species on land that has been clear of forest cover for at least five years. The methodology requires planting at a density sufficient to achieve forest cover (typically at least 200 stems per hectare) and reaching a height of at least two meters. As a participant in the Australian Government's Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot (likely Round 2, which targeted the South Coast NRM region), this project focuses on delivering biodiversity improvements alongside carbon sequestration.

Environmentally, the Bremer Bay region experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers, with an average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm. The local landscape typically features sandy duplex soils, often grey sands overlying clay or gravel, which are common in the Albany Sandplain and Bremer system. These soil types naturally support diverse heath and mallee scrub vegetation, which the project aims to replicate or restore through its mixed-species planting activities.
