Project Information:

AA2024R_SouthEastL_S2 is a Plantation Forestry project located in the Glamorgan-Spring Bay and Southern Midlands local government areas, approximately 50km northeast of Hobart in Tasmania. It was registered in August 2024 and initially covers 280.60 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects involve sequestering carbon by establishing new plantations, maintaining existing ones, or converting them for the commercial harvesting of wood products. The standard requirements for this methodology dictate that the proponent must maintain commercial tree stocking densities and manage the forest for ongoing growth and sustainable harvesting, ensuring the land is not reverted to non-forested use such as agricultural pasture.

The surrounding region of southeast Tasmania is well-known for commercial forestry operations as well as agricultural uses such as sheep grazing and cropping. The area generally experiences a moderate to high rainfall classification which is highly suitable for timber production. Local soils are variable but typically consist of clay loams, podzols, and highly productive ferrosols.

This project sequesters carbon by converting an existing short-rotation plantation forest to a long-rotation plantation forest intended for the commercial harvesting of wood products. An interesting note about this project is that on April 17, 2025, a variation was officially made to the project area to add extra land to the registered project boundary. Furthermore, the project involves natural asset management company SFM Environmental Solutions Pty Ltd acting as an agent on behalf of the project proponent, The Trust Company (Australia) Limited as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust.
