Project Information:
AA2024R_SouthEastL_S2 is a Plantation Forestry project located in southeast Tasmania, approximately 60km northeast of Hobart. The project encompasses multiple blocks of land situated near the rural localities of Buckland and Woodsdale, within the Glamorgan-Spring Bay and Southern Midlands local government areas. Registered on August 8, 2024, the project originally covered 280.60 hectares, though a variation in April 2025 expanded the project area to include additional land.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it engages in the conversion of short-rotation plantation forests to long-rotation plantation forests. In practice, this means shifting the management focus from growing trees for short-term pulpwood production (harvested roughly every 10–15 years) to growing high-quality sawlogs (harvested every 25–30+ years). By extending the growth period and altering thinning regimes, the trees sequester significantly more carbon in their biomass and root systems over time compared to the previous baseline of frequent harvesting.
The region surrounding Buckland and Woodsdale is characterized by a mix of dry sclerophyll forestry and grazing land for sheep and cattle. The environment typically experiences moderate rainfall, ranging from 600mm to 900mm annually depending on elevation. The soils in this part of Tasmania are often derived from Jurassic dolerite, presenting as clay-loams or podzolic soils which are well-suited to forestry but can be prone to erosion if not managed carefully. The project is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, a prominent Tasmanian forest manager, acting on behalf of The Trust Company (Australia) Limited as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust. This structure suggests the project is part of an institutional investment portfolio focused on sustainable timber and carbon assets.
