Snowy Mountains Forest Environmental Plantings Carbon Project #1

Project Information:
Snowy Mountains Forest Environmental Plantings Carbon Project #1 is a reforestation initiative located in the Monaro region of New South Wales, approximately 10 kilometers north of the township of Bombala. Registered in July 2024, the project covers 181 hectares across the properties known as "Airlie Park" and "Iona." These properties are part of the larger Snowy Mountains Forests estate, managed by Snowy Mountains Forests Pty Limited, a company that acquired significant assets following the liquidation of the Willmott Forests managed investment schemes in 2012.
The project operates under the "Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings" methodology. This involves establishing permanent native forests on land that was previously cleared for agricultural use, in this case, likely for sheep or cattle grazing, which is the dominant land use in the surrounding district. Unlike commercial plantations intended for harvest, environmental plantings are designed to remain permanently, sequestering carbon and improving biodiversity. To meet the methodology's definition of a forest, the trees are typically planted at a density sufficient to achieve a canopy cover of at least 20% and a height of 2 meters (often requiring stocking rates of over 200 stems per hectare).
Environmentally, the site sits on the Monaro Tablelands, a region characterized by a cool temperate climate with cold winters and variable rainfall that is often shadow-affected by the nearby Snowy Mountains. The soils in this area are typically derived from granite or basalt; the Monaro region is known for its granitic sandy loams and areas of fertile basalt-derived clays (ferrosols/dermosols), which support the region's extensive pastoral and forestry industries.
An interesting aspect of this project is its transition from the name "Airlie Park Iona Woodland Regeneration Carbon Project" to its current title in October 2024. This rebranding aligns it more closely with the corporate identity of the proponent, Snowy Mountains Forests, which primarily manages commercial pine plantations but utilizes this specific project for native vegetation restoration and carbon credit generation. The project is supported by Climate Friendly Pty Ltd, a well-known carbon service provider.
