Project Information:
AA2024E_LoonganaP.S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located near the locality of Loongana, approximately 35km southwest of Ulverstone in the North West region of Tasmania. Registered on May 20, 2024, the project covers a relatively small area of roughly 70 hectares. The project is situated within the Central Coast Council local government area, a region characterized by its deep valleys, steep terrain, and significant forestry operations.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it classifies as an "Avoided Conversion" project. This activity involves maintaining an existing plantation forest that was scheduled to be converted into non-forested land (such as pasture for grazing or cropping). By continuing to manage the land as a commercial plantation, the project avoids the emissions associated with clearing the trees and decomposing the biomass, while continuing to sequester carbon in the growing forest and long-term wood products.
Environmentally, the Loongana area is well-suited for forestry, situated in a high-rainfall zone that typically receives over 1,000mm of precipitation annually. The region features fertile soils, predominantly Ferrosols (Krasnozems) and Dermosols, which are highly productive and support the rapid growth of plantation species like Eucalyptus nitens or Pinus radiata. The project is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, a prominent Tasmanian forest manager, on behalf of The Trust Company (Australia) Limited, indicating it is likely part of a larger investment portfolio held by 'The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust'.
