Ansfield Reforestation Project

Project Information:

The Ansfield Reforestation Project is an environmental planting project located at the "Ansfield" property, approximately 12 kilometers south of Wee Waa and 40 kilometers west of Narrabri in the Namoi Valley region of New South Wales. Registered in June 2024, the project covers 297 hectares of land that was historically used for dryland farming and grazing. The property itself, which totals nearly 650 hectares, is situated on flat alluvial plains characteristic of the area.

This project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings, FullCAM) Methodology Determination 2024. This methodology requires the establishment of permanent native forest cover on land that has been clear of forest for at least five years. The project involves planting a mix of native species, likely including Belah (Casuarina cristata), Bimble Box (Eucalyptus populnea), and Wilga, which are indigenous to the local "belah country." Although originally registered under the 2014 methodology, the project transitioned to the updated 2024 determination in October 2025.

The environment in the Narrabri and Wee Waa region is defined by a semi-arid to warm temperate climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 590mm. The soil profile at the project site consists of fertile grey cracking clays (Vertosols) and heavy chocolate soils, which are highly productive for agriculture but also well-suited for supporting dense native regeneration. The project proponent, Permagen Planting Land 2 Pty Ltd, is an entity associated with Permagen, a carbon developer founded by the team behind renewable energy company Genex Power. This project appears to be part of a broader portfolio supported by investment from Wollemi Capital, aimed at converting marginal agricultural land into high-integrity carbon sinks.
