Project Information:

AA2024R_ParsonsL_S1 is a commercial plantation forestry project located in the Derwent Valley region of Tasmania, approximately 55km northwest of Hobart and directly adjacent to the town of Bushy Park. Registered on April 10, 2024, the project covers a substantial area of 965.42 hectares. The surrounding region is deeply integrated into Tasmania's timber and agricultural sectors, well-known for its historic hop fields, grazing properties, and extensive forestry operations.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. As a "new establishment" project, it involves planting timber species on land that has been clear of forest for at least seven years, typically converting marginal grazing land into forestry. Unlike environmental plantings, this methodology allows for commercial harvesting; carbon credits are calculated based on the long-term average carbon stocks sequestered in the trees and the wood products derived from them after harvest.

Environmentally, the Bushy Park area experiences a cool temperate climate with moderate rainfall, averaging approximately 570mm annually in the valleys, with higher precipitation levels on the surrounding slopes. The soils in the region are highly productive, ranging from fertile alluvial loams on the river flats to clay and podzolic soils on the hillsides, making the area ideal for both Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus timber production.

The project is likely part of SFM Environmental Solutions' "ActivAcre" program, as suggested by the "AA" prefix and the proponent structure (The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust). This program allows landowners to lease underutilized sections of their farms for timber production, creating a dual income stream from lease payments and carbon credits while maintaining traditional farming on the rest of the property.
