Project Information:

AA2024R_ParsonsL_S1 is a plantation forestry project located in the Central Highlands region of Tasmania, approximately 60km northwest of Hobart. It was registered in April 2024 and covers an area of 965.42 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects involve establishing and maintaining new plantations, converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation, or avoiding the conversion of existing plantations to non-forest land. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) under this methodology, the project must establish a viable tree stocking density, maintain sustained forest cover, and manage the trees for the commercial harvest of wood products.

The Central Highlands area is well known for sheep and beef cattle grazing, alongside extensive forestry operations. The region features a cool temperate climate. While rainfall is high in the west, the eastern rain shadow areas typically receive between 600mm to 800mm annually. Soils in this region often consist of coarse sand over clay or podzolic types, which are historically less suited for intensive cropping but ideal for long-rotation commercial timber species.

This project sequesters carbon by establishing a new plantation forest dedicated to commercial harvesting. It is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions acting as the agent for the project proponent, The Trust Company (Australia) Limited as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust. Interestingly, SFM operates the "ActivAcre" program across Tasmania, an initiative that focuses on transforming underutilised, lower-quality agricultural land into high-integrity carbon and timber-producing assets. By integrating commercial species into these landscapes, projects of this nature help provide valuable shelterbelts for livestock, diversify farm income, and drive long-term environmental restoration.
