Flinders Carbon Project 3

ERF192501

Project Information:

Flinders Carbon Project 3 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Millewa region of northwest Victoria, approximately 75km west of the major regional city of Mildura. Registered on August 23, 2024, the project covers a project area of roughly 305 hectares. The surrounding region is predominantly used for dryland agriculture, including cereal cropping and livestock grazing, typical of the Mallee district.

This project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology. This method credits landholders for increasing soil carbon stocks through changes in land management practices. Specific activities for this project include altering stocking rates to improve vegetation cover, establishing permanent pasture on previously cropped or fallow land, and rejuvenating existing pastures through seeding. The 2021 methodology is a "hybrid" approach that uses physical soil sampling combined with modeled estimates to calculate carbon abatement over a 25-year crediting period.

The environment in the Mildura and Millewa region is classified as semi-arid, characterized by low and variable rainfall (typically averaging 280-300mm annually). The soils in this area are generally Calcarosols (calcareous sandy loams) and Sodosols, often light-textured and prone to wind erosion if vegetation cover is not maintained. The project's focus on maintaining pasture cover is particularly beneficial in this landscape for stabilizing light soils and retaining moisture. The project appears to be part of a broader portfolio, as indicated by the sequential numbering (Project 3) and the simultaneous registration of "Flinders Carbon Project 2" in the same local government area.
