Honeymah NFMR Project

Project Information:
Honeymah NFMR Project is a Native Forest from Managed Regrowth (NFMR) project located on the Honeymah pastoral station, approximately 70km northwest of Dirranbandi and 83km southwest of St George in southern Queensland. It was registered in March 2024 and covers 17,705.83 hectares.
Native Forest from Managed Regrowth projects involve regenerating native forests from in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers, rather than active tree planting. Standard requirements for this methodology include the cessation of mechanical or chemical land clearing that was previously used to maintain pasture, alongside careful management of the timing and extent of grazing to ensure livestock do not suppress the emerging regrowth.
The St George and Dirranbandi region is traditionally dominated by extensive cattle and sheep grazing operations set across flat, semi-arid plains. The area is classified as semi-arid, typically experiencing an average annual rainfall of 450mm to 475mm. The local landscape features a mix of soil types ranging from heavy cracking clays (black soil) to the lighter red earths typical of the Mulga lands, which naturally support native species like Poplar Box and Mulga.
Pastoral Partners Australia acquired the Honeymah aggregation in late 2023 for approximately $32 million as part of a strategy to integrate commercial livestock farming with large-scale carbon sequestration. The property currently runs an active 3,000-head cattle grazing operation alongside the carbon project, which features a 100-year permanence period. Additionally, the project is establishing a biodiversity baseline to track environmental improvements using an Accounting for Nature methodology.
