Wongalee NFMR Project

Project Information:

Wongalee NFMR Project is a native forest regeneration project located at Wongalee Station, approximately 50km southwest of St George and north of Dirranbandi in southern Queensland. Registered on March 26, 2024, the project covers a substantial area of 15,766 hectares. The property, situated at 2315 Honeymah Lane, has historically been utilized for cattle grazing, a land use that continues alongside the carbon project operations.

The project operates under the Native Forest from Managed Regrowth (NFMR) methodology. This method differs from planting projects as it relies on the assisted regeneration of native forests from in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers, rather than active tree planting. The core activity involves the cessation of mechanical or chemical suppression, historically used to clear land for pasture, and the careful management of grazing timing and extent to allow vegetation to recover and reach forest cover status.

Regionally, the area is defined by a semi-arid climate typical of the Balonne Shire, experiencing hot summers and variable rainfall averaging around 500mm annually. The landscape features a mix of soil types common to the St George Plain, predominantly Vertosols (cracking clays) on floodplains and Kandosols (red earths) on the sandplains and ridges. These soils are productive for pastoral activities but require careful management to maintain ground cover during dry spells.

An interesting facet of this project is its ownership by Pastoral Partners Australia (PPA), a company backed by the infrastructure manager Morrison & Co. PPA acquired the property as part of a strategy to aggregate grazing land for dual revenue streams: sustainable protein production and high-integrity carbon credits. By mid-2025, the project had already achieved its first issuance of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), with expectations to generate approximately 460,000 credits over its 25-year crediting period.
