Trandos Regeneration Project
ERF188832
Project Information:
The Trandos Regeneration Project is an environmental planting project located in the Shire of Gingin, approximately 75 kilometers north of Perth, Western Australia. Registered in October 2023, the project covers roughly 49 hectares of land on the Swan Coastal Plain near the locality of Woodridge. This region is characterized by a mix of intensive horticulture, cattle grazing, and rural lifestyle blocks.
Operating under the 2014 Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology, the project involves establishing permanent native vegetation on land that had been cleared for at least five years. The planting design utilizes a mix of species native to the local area, typically planted at a density sufficient to achieve forest canopy cover (generally at least 200 stems per hectare) over time.
The environmental conditions in this part of the Swan Coastal Plain typically consist of siliceous sandy soils (often associated with the Spearwood or Bassendean dune systems), which are well-drained but low in nutrients. The climate is Mediterranean, with the majority of rainfall occurring during the winter months, averaging between 600mm and 750mm annually.
The project proponent, D. Trandos & Sons Pty Ltd, is better known as Trandos Hydroponic Growers (THG), a prominent Western Australian family business with over 80 years of history in vegetable production. While primarily recognized as one of Australia's largest growers of tomatoes, sweet corn, and beans, the family has actively pursued sustainability initiatives. This carbon project likely represents an effort to regenerate marginal agricultural land or offset the emissions footprint of their intensive horticultural operations.
