Marama MMV Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Marama MMV Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 60km east of Taroom in the Banana Shire of Central Queensland. Registered in February 2025, the project covers 347.57 hectares on the "Marama" property, which is part of the extensive pastoral portfolio held by Willinga Pastoral Co (owned by Terry Snow's Capital Property Group). The property forms part of an aggregation with the neighbouring "Karalee Plains" station, situated in a region renowned for beef cattle grazing on brigalow and softwood scrub soils.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Measurement and Models), which credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon stocks through changes in land management. Specific activities for the Marama project include the strategic application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, the re-establishment of pastures through seeding, and the integration of legume species into the cropping or pasture system. These practices are designed to boost biomass production and improve soil health, thereby sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the soil profile.

The local environment is characterized by a sub-tropical, summer-dominant rainfall pattern, averaging approximately 650mm annually. The soils in this "dress circle" grazing region are typically fertile, deep clays and loams associated with the brigalow belt, which are highly responsive to pasture improvement but can be susceptible to nutrient rundown over time. The project aligns with Willinga Pastoral Co's broader strategy of pasture enhancement to increase carrying capacity for their breeding and backgrounding operations, which utilize Hereford and Santa Gertrudis genetics.
