Booylgoo Springs Regeneration Project

Project Information:
Booylgoo Springs Regeneration Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located on the Booylgoo Springs pastoral station, approximately 70km northeast of Sandstone and 80km west of Leinster in the Murchison region of Western Australia. Registered in September 2023, the project covers a vast area of 233,570 hectares, suggesting it encompasses the entirety or the majority of the pastoral lease known as Booylgoo Spring (Lease N050557).
The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which involves suppressing negative drivers of vegetation growth to allow native forests to regenerate from in-situ seed sources, rootstock, or lignotubers. Unlike environmental planting, this method does not involve active tree planting. Instead, the project proponents manage the timing and extent of grazing activities, likely transitioning from continuous grazing to rotational systems or destocking specific zones, to permit the recovery of native vegetation that was previously suppressed for at least 10 years.
The Murchison region is characterized by an arid to semi-arid climate with low and irregular rainfall, typically averaging around 200mm to 250mm annually. The landscape consists of rangelands dominated by Mulga (Acacia aneura) woodlands and shrublands. The soils in this area are generally red earths, sandy loams, and shallow soils over hardpan or granite (often classified as Red Arenosols or similar deep sandy soils in the arid zone). The land use is primarily pastoral grazing for sheep and cattle, which is consistent with the project's focus on modifying grazing pressure to generate carbon credits.
The proponent, Rangeview Asset Pty Ltd, holds the pastoral lease for the station, while Climate Friendly Pty Ltd acts as the carbon service provider facilitating the project. The project's immense scale highlights the significant role of Western Australian rangelands in the national carbon market, leveraging vast tracts of arid land for natural sequestration.
