Bairnsdale Landfill Gas Flaring Project

ERF187823

Project Information:

The Bairnsdale Landfill Gas Flaring Project (ERF187823) is a waste sector project located at the Bairnsdale Landfill in Forge Creek, Victoria. The physical site is situated approximately 10 kilometers southwest of the Bairnsdale town center, near the Gippsland Lakes. Although the project's input coordinates point to a location near Bathurst in New South Wales, the project is explicitly named for and managed by the East Gippsland Shire Council, placing its operations firmly in the Gippsland region of Victoria.

Registered on February 20, 2024, this project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. The primary activity involves the installation of a new landfill gas collection system designed to capture methane generated by decomposing legacy and non-legacy waste. Once captured, the gas is combusted using a flaring system. This process converts methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into carbon dioxide, which has a significantly lower global warming potential, thereby generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for the abatement achieved.

The surrounding East Gippsland region is characterized by a mix of agricultural land use, primarily grazing and cropping, alongside significant forestry operations and conservation reserves. The environment in Forge Creek typically experiences a temperate climate with moderate rainfall, averaging around 650mm annually. The local soil profiles are generally consistent with the Gippsland Plains, often featuring sandy loams over clay subsoils. Dylan Nichols is listed as the agent for the project, assisting the East Gippsland Shire Council with the administration of the carbon credit scheme.
