Kurina 2023 Project

Project Information:
Kurina 2023 Project is a plantation forestry project located across multiple sites in the north-western region of Tasmania. The project area covers approximately 1,455 hectares, with distinct land parcels situated near Hampshire, roughly 30km south of Burnie, and near Elizabeth Town, approximately 50km southeast of Devonport. Registered in October 2024, the project is situated within a landscape dominated by intensive commercial forestry and agriculture.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it utilizes a "short to long rotation" conversion strategy. Standard plantation forestry often harvests trees on short rotations (e.g., 10-15 years) for woodchips and pulp. By converting to a long rotation, the project manager commits to growing the trees for a significantly longer period to produce high-quality sawlogs for construction. This extends the duration carbon is stored in the living biomass and transfers carbon into long-lived wood products rather than short-lived paper products.
The North West Tasmanian region is characterized by a cool temperate climate with reliable, high rainfall, often exceeding 1000mm annually. The soils in the project areas are predominantly Ferrosols (red basalt soils), which are free-draining and highly fertile, making them ideal for high-yield forestry operations.
While the proponent is listed as The Trust Company (Australia) Limited, the asset is operationally managed by Forico, Tasmania's largest private forest manager. The "Tasmanian Forest Operating Sub Trust" is the financial vehicle for Forico's estate, which is owned by a consortium of investors led by New Forests. The project name "Kurina" is likely derived from the Tasmanian Aboriginal (Palawa Kani) word for "Eagle," reflecting Forico's practice of utilizing indigenous names for their estate management units.
