Source Separated Organic Waste projects involve separating eligible organic material at the point of generation to prevent it from going to a traditional landfill. Instead, the waste is treated using alternative low-emission methods, allowing proponents to earn carbon credits (ACCUs) for the avoided methane emissions.

Because the project operates across various broad regions in two states, the regional land use is predominantly urban, commercial, and industrial where organic waste is readily generated. Environmental conditions across these sites are highly variable; rainfall classifications range from high rainfall coastal areas to semi-arid inland zones, while soil types vary broadly from coastal sandy loams to inland heavy clays.

This project involves new, expansion, and aggregated waste diversion activities where eligible waste from a single stream is transferred to facilities for treatment using open windrow or enclosed composting technologies. The project proponent, EC Focus Pty Ltd, is an independent sustainability and circular economy consultancy that helps businesses manage their carbon footprints and navigate government incentives. Interestingly, the Source Separated Organic Waste methodology officially expired on March 31, 2026, meaning no new projects can be registered under this method, though existing projects like this one can continue to operate and generate credits for the duration of their crediting period.
