Brereton Carbon Project 11

Project Information:
Brereton Carbon Project 11 is a soil carbon project located near the locality of Narridy, approximately 25km southeast of Port Pirie and 200km north of Adelaide in South Australia. Registered in December 2023, the project covers 202 hectares within the Northern Areas Council local government area. The region is situated in South Australia's Mid North, an area traditionally known for mixed farming operations, particularly cereal cropping and sheep grazing.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology requires the proponent to demonstrate increases in soil carbon stocks over time through changes in land management practices. Measurement involves a baseline soil sampling round followed by subsequent sampling rounds to quantify sequestration, often supported by modelling.
The local environment in the Narridy and Crystal Brook region is characterized by a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with winter-dominant rainfall averaging between 350mm and 400mm annually. The terrain typically consists of gently undulating rises and alluvial flats. Soils in this area are generally red-brown earths, described as hard sandy loams over red clay or calcareous clay loams, which are productive but can be susceptible to erosion if over-tilled.
To achieve carbon sequestration, the project has committed to specific management activities including the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies and a conversion from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector known for aggregating projects using digital technology and soil sampling protocols.
