FPC 2023 CP2

FPC 2023 CP2 is a plantation forestry project located near Frankland River and Cranbrook, approximately 330km south of Perth in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It was registered in October 2023 and covers an area of 460.83 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects involve establishing, modifying, or maintaining plantation forests intended for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, standard requirements typically include ensuring the forest is managed at an appropriate stocking density for commercial timber and conducting scheduled harvesting and replanting rotations. This particular project achieves its carbon sequestration by continuing a plantation, effectively avoiding the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation into non-forested land.

The Frankland River and Cranbrook area is renowned for its highly productive agricultural sector, particularly broadacre mixed farming, sheep and cattle grazing, world-class viticulture, and extensive commercial forestry operations (such as Pinus radiata softwoods). The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with a moderate-to-high winter-dominant rainfall, averaging around 600mm annually. Soils in the vicinity are diverse, generally ranging from highly productive, well-drained gravelly ironstone marri loams to deep and shallow sands overlaying clay and gravel.

Operated by the Forest Products Commission, the Western Australian government's forestry enterprise, this project carries a nominated permanence period of 25 years. The project was originally registered under the name "FPC Carbon Project 3" before an official name variation to "FPC 2023 CP2" was registered on September 3, 2024.
