Project Information:
FPC 2023 CP2 is a plantation forestry project located in the South West region of Western Australia, approximately 70km southeast of Manjimup. It was registered in October 2023 and covers 460.83ha.
Plantation forestry projects involve generating carbon abatement by establishing new plantations, converting to long-rotation plantations, or avoiding the conversion of existing plantations to non-forested land. To meet methodology requirements, proponents must establish and maintain a plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products while adhering to standard stocking densities.
The South West region is well known for commercial forestry operations, conservation reserves, and agricultural grazing. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by high, reliable winter rainfall, and the soils are typically lateritic gravels and sandy loams over clay.
This project sequesters carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation to non-forested land, instead establishing and maintaining a new plantation for commercial wood products. The proponent, the Forest Products Commission, is a Western Australian Government trading enterprise responsible for managing the state's renewable timber resources. The project was originally registered as FPC Carbon Project 3 before a name variation was recorded in September 2024.
