Project Information:

FPC 2023 CP1 is a Plantation Forestry project located in the South West region of Western Australia, with plantation areas situated approximately 10km southeast of Nannup and near the Balingup-Greenbushes area, roughly 260km south of Perth. It was registered in October 2023 and covers an active project area of 554.49 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects operating under the 2022 Methodology Determination involve increasing the long-term average carbon stock in forests and their subsequently harvested wood products. This is typically achieved by establishing new commercial plantation forests on land previously used for other purposes, or by converting short-rotation plantations (such as those grown for pulpwood) into long-rotation plantations (grown for sawlogs). FPC 2023 CP1 actively utilizes both of these methods, sequestering carbon through the establishment of a new plantation as well as transitioning an existing short-rotation forest into a long-rotation forest.

The Nannup and greater South West region is heavily renowned for its commercial forestry operations, as well as grazing, cropping, and general agriculture. The environment is classified as a high-rainfall zone characterized by a Mediterranean climate. The region's soils are typically lateritic, consisting of gravelly sandy loams over clay that naturally support robust native Karri and Jarrah forests. These deep, well-draining soils and consistent rainfall make the land highly suitable for commercial tree farming and continuous carbon storage.

This project is operated by the Forest Products Commission (FPC), a Western Australian Government entity responsible for managing the state's commercial forestry operations. Interestingly, public registry records show that the project was originally named "FPC Carbon Project 2" upon its inception, but underwent an official variation to be renamed "FPC 2023 CP1" on September 3, 2024.
