Humphreys Carbon Project 6

Project Information:
Humphreys Carbon Project 6 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu, approximately 30km west of Koorda and 50km east of Wongan Hills in Western Australia. Registered on June 18, 2025, the project covers a project area of roughly 353 hectares. The site is situated within the extensive Western Australian Wheatbelt, a region heavily utilised for dryland cropping (wheat, canola, barley) and sheep grazing.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Measurement and Models), which credits farmers for increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) levels relative to a baseline. Specifically, this project aims to boost carbon stocks by applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil. By correcting these imbalances, the project encourages greater plant biomass production, which in turn increases the input of carbon into the soil profile through root systems and crop residues.
The local environment is characterised by a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, receiving relatively low annual rainfall (typically 300–350mm), most of which falls during the winter growing season. The soils in this central Wheatbelt area are generally ancient and deeply weathered, often consisting of sandy loams, sand-over-clay duplex soils, or ironstone gravels, which naturally tend to be low in essential nutrients, making the project's fertilization strategy particularly relevant for this landscape.
An interesting aspect of this project is its proponent, Agriprove, which is a prominent developer of soil carbon projects in Australia. The "Humphreys Carbon Project 6" designation suggests this is part of a larger aggregation of projects, likely managed by the same landholder or family group across multiple properties or paddocks in the district.
