Carrick Carbon Project 2
ERF182848
Project Information:
Carrick Carbon Project 2 is a soil organic carbon sequestration project located approximately 55km west-northwest of Kingaroy, near the locality of Boondooma in the South Burnett region of Queensland. Registered on July 11, 2025, the project covers an area of 185.49 hectares. The surrounding region is predominantly used for agricultural purposes, particularly cattle grazing and cropping, supported by the area's established rural infrastructure.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology rewards landholders for increasing soil carbon stocks through changes in land management. Specific activities for this project include altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to promote vegetation cover and re-establishing or rejuvenating pastures. By optimizing grazing pressure and improving pasture health, the project aims to enhance photosynthetic activity and root growth, thereby sequestering more atmospheric carbon into the soil profile.
Environmentally, the South Burnett region is characterized by a sub-tropical climate with a mean annual rainfall of approximately 650mm to 700mm, though this decreases slightly towards the west near Boondooma. The soils in this area are diverse; while Kingaroy is famous for its deep Red Earths (krasnozems), the landscape further west often transitions into a mix of granite-derived soils, traprock, and heavier clays in the flats, which are well-suited to the project's grazing-focused activities.
The project is developed by Agriprove Solutions Co No.2 Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Agriprove, which is Australia's largest facilitator of soil carbon projects. Interestingly, while the project name "Carrick" is shared with a well-known Agriprove demonstration site in Tasmania, this specific project is firmly situated in Queensland's cattle country. The Carrick family name also has historical significance in the wider region, particularly in relation to pastoral stations and timber milling in the Burnett and northern Queensland areas.
