Willowlee Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Willowlee Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located at Sandigo, roughly 20km southeast of Narrandera and 60km west of Wagga Wagga in NSW. It was registered in November 2023 and covers 388.92 ha.

Soil carbon projects under the Measurement and Models methodology involve introducing new agricultural management practices to increase the storage of organic carbon in the soil. Standard requirements include rigorous baseline soil sampling to establish initial carbon levels across the project area, followed by subsequent physical testing and modelling to accurately measure the carbon sequestration achieved over the project's lifespan.

The Sandigo and Narrandera region is a prominent agricultural area known for mixed farming operations, encompassing wheat, rice, and sheep or cattle grazing properties. The area experiences a semi-arid to temperate climate with moderate-to-low rainfall, and local soils generally consist of red-brown earths, clay loams, and sandy loams.

This project aims to increase carbon in the agricultural soil system by applying synthetic or non-synthetic nutrients to the land to address material deficiencies, alongside incorporating new legume species into the existing cropping or pasture systems. The project is managed by the proponent MJ Gooden & Co Pty Ltd (as Trustee for Goodenterprises Trust), with additional participation from Carbon Link Operations Pty Ltd, an organization that typically provides specialized soil testing, data management, and technical support to landholders participating in carbon farming.
