Bury Carbon Project 6

Project Information:

Bury Carbon Project 6 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Tatiara District of South Australia, approximately 30 kilometers east of Bordertown and just west of the Victorian border near the locality of Wolseley. Registered in May 2023, the project covers 380 hectares of agricultural land. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a leading developer in the Australian soil carbon sector.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method credits landholders for increasing the amount of carbon stored in their soil compared to a baseline. To achieve this, the project has committed to specific land management activities, including the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, the retention of crop stubble, and a conversion from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices. These activities are designed to minimize soil disturbance and maximize biomass retention, thereby sequestering carbon.

The Tatiara District, often referred to as "Good Country," is a productive agricultural region known for mixed farming, including cropping, lucerne seed production, and livestock grazing. The area typically experiences a Mediterranean climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 450mm to 500mm. The local terrain generally features sandy loams over clay or shallow soils on limestone and calcrete ridges. These soil types are productive but can be susceptible to acidity and wind erosion, making the soil health improvements targeted by this carbon project particularly beneficial for long-term land resilience.
