Landari Rossarden 2022

Project Information:
Landari Rossarden 2022 is a plantation forestry project located near the small township of Rossarden in the Fingal Valley region of Tasmania. The project area sits approximately 70 kilometres southeast of Launceston, nestled in the foothills below Ben Lomond National Park. Registered in July 2023, the project covers a total area of 285 hectares. The surrounding region is historically known for tin mining and forestry, though the landscape today is predominantly a mix of grazing land, native bushland, and plantation estates.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, specifically focusing on the transition of an existing plantation to a permanent forest (Schedule 4). This activity involves taking a commercial plantation that was scheduled for harvest and conversion to non-forested land (such as pasture for grazing) and instead retaining the trees permanently. By doing so, the project ensures the carbon stored in the trees remains locked away rather than being released through harvesting and land clearing. To qualify, the proponent must demonstrate that the plantation was at genuine risk of being converted to a non-forest use within 24 months.
Environmentally, the Rossarden area is characterized by a cool-temperate climate with moderate rainfall, typically ranging between 750mm and 1,000mm annually. The terrain is rugged, with soils in the area often described as stony, gradational soils derived from Devonian granite and granodiorite, or gritty clay loams. These soils are generally well-suited for forestry and native vegetation but can be marginal for intensive cropping due to their stoniness and the steep topography.
The project proponent, Landari Pty Ltd, is a Tasmanian-based developer specializing in carbon and biodiversity offsets. The company is led by experienced foresters who focus on retaining vegetation in the landscape. This project is part of a broader portfolio where Landari manages the transition of traditional forestry assets into permanent carbon sinks, often in areas where traditional timber economics have shifted, making carbon sequestration a viable alternative land use.
